Innovation Unleashed: Innovating Through Challenges

Innovation Unleashed represents the many ways we express our expertise, and in many cases, it is through problem-solving. Fabrication hurdles and communication breakdowns can happen on any project, especially the dynamic range of custom pieces we deal with on an everyday basis. In this issue, we’ll highlight how Entech rises to these challenges, featuring insights from our Production Manager, Chris, and Director of Operations, Ian. They will share firsthand experiences and strategies that drive our innovative solutions, ensuring timely project delivery without compromising quality.

Insight from Chris Gaines - Production Manager

Can you walk us through some of the biggest fabrication challenges you’ve faced on recent projects and how you overcame them?

“Currently we are working on a project that we must build our items around an existing ride.  The challenge is to ensure that we meet our requirements while not interfering with the ride vehicles and the ride maintenance bay. We are having to build as we go, which makes it more of a challenge because no two areas are the same. The other obstacle is the work being done on third shift, which makes it difficult to communicate with our team at the shop. We try to walk locations ahead of time to see what hurdles may be in our way, and then relay that to the engineering team so we can get answers to allow us to move forward.

How does Entech approach testing and problem-solving for projects that have never been fabricated before?

Our engineering team takes time to plan out function tests that they would require for us to do before, during, and after fabrication of our projects. It usually is a group effort so we can ensure that what we design, and build performs as it’s intended.

Insight from Ian Gaines - Director of Operations

What strategies does Entech use to source alternative materials or suppliers when faced with shortages or delays?

We conduct research and communicate with our vendors to stay informed about new products entering the market. Additionally, we engage with our clients, who sometimes provide insights into innovative products. In the event of shortages, we reach out to our trusted suppliers and, when necessary, assemble orders from multiple sources.

Can you share a recent project where departments worked closely to resolve a significant challenge?

While working on a project to install a 20-foot fiberglass piece with integrated lighting, we encountered an issue with how the lights terminated at the end. A plastic cover on the lights was visually obtrusive and would be noticeable to guests. To address this, the two teams collaborated to design a custom cover plate that was both cost-effective and aligned with the project schedule.

What role does client collaboration play in navigating project hurdles?

The clients play a crucial role in overcoming project challenges. Their involvement in the final decision is essential to ensure the solution aligns with the creative vision and overall expectations. When engaged early in the process, things tend to run more smoothly, and they are more open to proposed ideas. We always want to keep an open source of communication available as well as we consistently try and send out the message that we are here to help the client and make their job as easy as possible.

Collaboration between the Engineering/Project Management group and Production teams is essential. When the Production team encounters an issue during assembly where something doesn't work as intended, both teams must work together to find a viable solution. They rely on each other's expertise and knowledge to resolve the problem effectivelyEntech's expert team relies on each other to surpass the many challenges that can arise, and we are proud to continue to surpass expectations for clients and guests alike. Stay tuned for the last couple months of our year of Unleashing Innovation, and do not hesitate to reach out if you have a unique problem that needs a custom-engineered solution!
