At Entech, the magic of our projects doesn’t just come from their visual impact - it comes from the systems behind the scenes that make them move, respond, and interact. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our most technically intricate capabilities: Controls Engineering.
From kinetic theme park elements to interactive museum exhibits, controls engineering is what transforms a static structure into a dynamic, immersive experience. It’s the art and science of blending precision programming, robust hardware, and seamless integration to ensure every motion, light, and sound happens exactly as intended.
In this edition of Entech: In the Spotlight, we’ll explore how our controls engineering capability elevates projects across industries and introduce the leader driving this work forward - Todd “Mac” McDonald, Manager of Controls Engineering.
What We Do Best
Controls engineering is what transforms a static structure into an immersive, interactive experience. At Entech, our controls team specializes in designing and integrating intelligent systems that make each project come alive - whether it’s a single moving element or a fully synchronized show action sequence.
Our strengths include:
Intelligent Design – Choosing the right technologies for the job, from PLC-based systems to microcontrollers, motion control, and custom user interfaces.
Precision Integration – Combining hardware, software, and mechanical systems to deliver reliable, repeatable performance.
Creative Problem-Solving – Developing tailored solutions that meet unique creative and technical challenges without compromising safety or reliability.
Partnership Collaboration – Knowing the right times to bring in the best outside resource to work collaboratively on the controls portion to assure the mechanical functionality is working precisely and safely.
By blending technical expertise with a deep understanding of creative intent, we ensure that our systems not only function flawlessly but also elevate the overall guest experience.
The Process
Our approach to controls engineering ensures accuracy, efficiency, and seamless integration from start to finish:
Collaboration & Planning – Working closely with our mechanical and electrical teams to define functional requirements and align the controls strategy with the project’s creative vision.
System Development – Designing and building UL 508A control panels, programming PLC logic, and integrating motion control, sensors, and user interfaces. Analyzing and implementing the use of ISO 13849 for evaluation of safety-related control systems for the machinery.
Testing & Simulation – Conducting in-shop testing to replicate real-world conditions, allowing us to troubleshoot and fine-tune before arriving on site.
Installation & Commissioning – Overseeing the installation process and ensuring every component works as intended, down to the smallest detail.
By thoroughly vetting each stage, we consistently deliver systems that are safe, intuitive, and perfectly aligned with the intended experience.
Employee Spotlight: Todd “Mac” McDonald, Manager of Controls Engineering

Todd “Mac” McDonald brings a wealth of expertise, creativity, and steady leadership to Entech’s controls engineering department. With more than 30 years of experience designing and integrating sophisticated control systems, Mac has worked on interactive museum exhibits, theatrical installations, and high-end entertainment experiences, making him exceptionally equipped to guide projects from planning to commissioning.
At Entech, Mac leads the design and execution of PLC-based systems, UL 508A panels, motion control solutions, and custom user interfaces. His work ensures that even the most complex builds operate smoothly and safely - no matter the scale.
For Mac, the real magic of controls lies in their ability to transform. “Controls bring projects to life,” he explains. “It’s the ability to breathe life into something static and give it a dynamic nature that makes it enjoyable. I suppose it seems a little magical. Beyond that I enjoy the constant learning required to understand new technologies, like motors, controllers, sensors, 3D printers and computers."
One standout project for Mac involved an escape room attraction where different control approaches were needed for various effects. A traditional PLC was used to manage motors and sensors in one area, while an Arduino microcontroller was chosen for a compact, retro LED display element. This flexibility - selecting the right technology for each challenge - is a hallmark of Mac’s problem-solving approach.
When it comes to delivering excellence, Mac compares his work to building a house: “Get the foundation right first.” He prioritizes research, data gathering, and collaboration to ensure the best possible outcome for each project.

Outside of Entech, Mac channels his passion for STEM into education as the Director of Steam Power for Kids, a nonprofit creating engaging science and engineering curriculum for middle and high school students. Through hands-on projects like building robots, he inspires the next generation of problem-solvers.
From intricate programming to seamless on-site integration, controls engineering is and unforgettable element to many of Entech’s most memorable projects. Under Mac’s leadership, our controls team ensures every motion, effect, and interaction runs flawlessly - elevating both the technical and creative impact of the work.
As we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, Entech is proud to spotlight the innovation, expertise, and dedication behind our Controls Engineering capability.
Stay tuned for next month’s Entech: In the Spotlight, where we’ll share another one of the capabilities - and the talented people - that make Entech unique.
