At Entech, installation is never treated as the final step in a project. In reality, successful installations begin months before a team ever arrives on site. Every decision made during engineering, fabrication, controls integration, and project management ultimately influences how efficiently a project can be installed in the field. 

This month’s Built for Real explores a simple truth: there is no such thing as "just installing it." The most successful projects are the ones that are designed, fabricated, tested, and planned with installation in mind from day one. 

Planning for Success Before Installation Begins 

Installation efficiency starts long before a project leaves our facility. During engineering and fabrication, teams evaluate transportation requirements, site access, assembly sequencing, lifting considerations, and installation constraints to ensure a smooth deployment process. 

By considering installation early, potential challenges can be identified and addressed before they become costly field issues. This proactive approach helps reduce installation durations, minimize disruptions, and improve overall project outcomes. 


Engineer Laura Dunlap explains that early collaboration between engineering and installation teams is one of the biggest contributors to a successful project. "When engineering coordinates with the install team during the design phase, installs go smoother." Installers help identify the information they need in the field, allowing engineers to produce drawings that clearly communicate critical dimensions, tolerances, and installation requirements. 

Laura also notes that site visits are often conducted together. 

"Usually the teams will visit sites together, with the install team checking for physical obstacles like door sizes and manlift space and the engineer checking the dimensions of the field and planning out tolerances based on site conditions." 

This early coordination helps bridge the gap between the ideal conditions of a model and the realities of an active job site. "This prevents the perfect model world from clashing with the reality of site conditions." 

Installation planning is not a standalone activity. It is integrated throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring every department contributes to successful field execution. When installation is planned from the beginning of a project, it reduces field rework, minimizes schedule impacts, improves safety, and helps projects open on time. 

Building It in the Shop Before Building It on Site 

One of the most effective ways to improve installation efficiency is through shop mock-ups and preassembly efforts. Whenever possible, components are assembled, tested, and verified at our facility before shipping to the project site. This allows teams to confirm fit, functionality, alignment, and sequencing in a controlled environment. 


















Project Manager Anthony Cornely considers mockups one of the most valuable milestones in the project lifecycle.  "Mockups are a critical milestone for any project." 


While much of the engineering work happens early, mockups provide the opportunity to validate designs before committing to fabrication or installation. During the design phase, they help confirm fitment, motion profiles, creative intent, and spatial constraints while giving stakeholders an opportunity to provide feedback before work progresses. 

Mockups also continue to provide value during fabrication. 


"A physical mockup can help confirm the actual weight, size, and handling requirements of the product that will need to be maneuvered on site." This allows teams to better plan lifting equipment, installation sequencing, and crew requirements while reducing uncertainty before arriving in the field. 

Sequencing Matters 

A successful installation is rarely just about what gets installed. It is about the order in which it happens. Installation sequencing requires coordination between engineering, fabrication, controls, logistics, and project management teams. Components often need to be installed in a specific order to ensure access, safety, and proper system integration. 

By developing detailed installation plans early, Entech helps ensure that equipment, personnel, materials, and site conditions are aligned when installation begins. 

Anthony has seen firsthand how early planning can dramatically improve field execution. On one special effects project, mockups completed at the beginning of the design phase allowed the team to validate stakeholder expectations, better understand installation constraints, and develop attachment strategies long before fabrication began. 

On another project involving static show set pieces, early mockups allowed the team to validate creative intent while engineering each piece to meet site conditions and installation requirements. Later in fabrication, installation mockups using the actual show pieces revealed an unexpected center of gravity before the equipment ever reached the job site. 

By identifying that issue early, the team developed a custom crate with dedicated lifting points, allowing the piece to be safely transported, lifted, and installed. 

As Anthony explains: 

"Ultimately, whether the process involves a mockup or a prototype, it is a worthwhile investment to allocate time for it early in the project." Those early exercises often uncover risks and lessons that would otherwise surface much later, helping protect the project budget, improve execution, and reduce costly field changes. 


Supporting the Project Long After Turnover 

Installation efficiency extends beyond the final bolt and final inspection. 

A project's long-term success depends on how easily operators and maintenance teams can understand, service, and maintain the systems they inherit. To support this, Entech provides detailed Operations & Maintenance documentation and QR-based manuals that allow users to quickly access critical information in the field. As systems evolve or updates are implemented, documentation can be updated and maintained to reflect the latest information. 

Laura emphasizes that documentation plays a much larger role than simply recording what was built. 

"The role of documentation is traceability." 

From material certifications to paint systems and fabrication procedures, thorough documentation allows clients to understand exactly how components were produced and recreate them accurately when replacement parts are needed. 


She also explains that testing and troubleshooting documentation are equally important. 

"Testing and troubleshooting procedures are crucial to ensuring things work as expected." 

These resources help operators identify issues, order replacement components when needed, and confidently maintain their systems long after turnover. And as always, support doesn't end when the project does. 

"Of course, in that documentation is also the contact information for Entech, as we always want to ensure clients are supported however they need it." 

 


Efficient installation does not happen by accident. It is the result of planning, coordination, testing, communication, and preparation across every stage of a project. 

From shop mock-ups and installation sequencing to documentation and long-term operational support, Entech approaches installation as a critical component of project success.
